Cabbages and more specifically cabbage juice has a wide range of health benefits. In earlier times before the advent of modern supermarkets, cabbage was widely used by the poorer classes as a cure all for many conditions because it was easy to grow and inexpensive to purchase if you didn’t have a small garden in which to plant it.
Cabbage is packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, working together they help to prevent cancer and even in many cases have some effects in reducing the size of cancerous growths. Add to this the high fiber content and the chances of developing colon cancer can be significantly reduced, plus the fiber helps to prevent constipation so you stay regular. While having its effect on cancer, the cabbage juice benefits extend as well to stomach ulcers, preventing them and even healing them in as little as two weeks when consuming about one quart of cabbage juice a day in small amounts throughout the day. Medical studies have shown this to be true.
Poultices made from cabbage leaves have been used for generations. These poutices are made by simply crushing the cabbage leaves so as the break through the thick plant cell walls especially the central rib in the middle of the leaf, then placing the crushed leaves on the affected area and covering with a cloth or more cabbage leaves. Sometimes the leaves might be placed in boiling or hot water for a minute or so before crushing and applying. These poultices have been used with success for bruises, sprains, burns, skin growths, insect bites, frostbite and to relieve sore throats from influenza. The cabbage leaves have an anti-inflammatory effect on the area rivaling that of over the counter medications.
Cabbage has been shown to help lower serum cholesterol by increasing the HDL (High Density Lipo-proteins) or good cholesterol over the LDL (Low Density Lipo-proteins) or bad cholesterol. This will help to reduce your risk for heart disease.
The vitamin A contained in cabbage juice along with the vitamin D work to produce clear healthy looking skin and slow down the destruction of the skin cells due to ultra violet rays and thus slow down the aging process and the formation of winkles.
If you are into physical activity, weight training or aerobics, the Vitamin B in cabbage juice can provide you with the energy to continue your routines, the lactic acid in the juice will help to relieve the sore muscles after the workout and the iron and other nutrients will help to build muscle tissue, all done with very little calorie intake.
Whether you choose the traditional green, the red or the savoy cabbage, you have a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients and enzymes at your fingertips. Straight cabbage juice isn’t too bad tasting, but isn’t the most palatable so you may want to combine it with apples or another fruit you enjoy. By combining it with a couple of carrots as well as a handful of spinach you have a concentrated energy drink, with benefits reaching from eye health to blood building to regularity.
